Cloistered in Kota Damansara's culinary clutter & chaos, Tokyo Pastry offers comforting calm, walled up in warm, elegantly soothing tones.
The food, however, is hit-&-miss, infused with Japanese influences, from this RM12.90 katsu burger (crispy chicken with mild curry, cucumbers & mushrooms in a charcoal bun, competent but not compelling) ...
... to RM6.90 wasabi-spiced fries (forgettable finger food) ...
... & cream-stuffed melon buns (perhaps best bought in the morning; might be stodgy at night).
Tokyo Pastry serves no liquor, but no matter: Tokyo Drinks, its sister outlet nearby, plies patrons with what a basic Japanese bar should serve.
Choya umeshu plum liquor, for a mouth-puckering sourness.
RM50 bottles of 300-ml sake supply sufficient complexity to satisfy.

Oh yes I bought so many cakes and buns during ONE trip that I regretted. Everything was forgettable! But the prices are high for such quality!
ReplyDeleteTNG: hopefully they'll make some improvements, cos this could be a nice cafe to lounge at and kick back in kota damansara! :D
DeleteWasabi fries, MSG overload?
ReplyDeleteThe trend of charcoal buns for homemade burgers but not all charcoal buns are perfectly baked I believed.
Loved your honest review!

Wilson: heh, no MSG, i think. no thirsty after-effects =) charcoal buns have definitely become very popular since mid-2012. they do provide quite an eye-catching appearance :D
DeleteSuch a shame as Katsu burger could potentially be a really good dish of done well. The wasabi fries look a bit freaky. Guess they used wasabi powder?
ReplyDeleteKelly: yeah, actually the katsu burger was all right here. decent and moderately enjoyable, but just lacked the extra oomph to elevate it =) and ya, i think that's wasabi powder. maybe a bit too much powder! :D
DeleteCharcoal buns are definitely trendy nowadays... too bad it didn't taste as good as it looked.
ReplyDeleteBaby Sumo: ooh, do try MyBurgerLab for a good combination of charcoal buns with tasty fillings! :D
DeleteSuper agree with Sean! =)
DeleteUlric: yay myburgerlab! :D
DeleteWasabi fries... It sounds wonderful!!
ReplyDeleteIf you have a minute, please check out my blog and follow me if you liked it. I'll appreciate it so much! Thanks!

Francesca: yeah, wasabi and fries makes for fun fusion! :D thanks for the link to your very nice blog. i can't quite understand it since i don't read italian, but i liked your photos =)
DeleteI reckon the breaded Chicken Milanese in Burger Junkyard is loads better than the katsu burger here...add a runny egg for more dripping wet flavour...hehe =)
ReplyDeleteUlric: that's true, burger junkyard is definitely the wiser option for burgers in kota damansara!
DeleteHey Sean,
DeleteGreat write up :) If you're around Kota Damansara, do try out our YummyLicious range of healthy-delicious food. We have healthy burgers as well. We're a home based food delivery business. Thanks! https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.335577403202928.76982.191168947643775&type=3
wasabi fries...my kind of food! Am still looking for a place that whips out wasabi fried rice!
ReplyDeleteMissyblurkit; heheh, a testament to the terrific versatility of wasabi! And wasabi fried rice sounds like a very intriguing recipe. Maybe something u could try whipping up at home sometime! :D
DeleteYeah, too bad it didn't taste as good as it looks. The melon buns with cream stuffed inside sounds promising though. :)
ReplyDeleteHuai Bin: yeah, the food looks attractive enough, now it just needs some tweaking to make sure it matches its appearance. i usually really enjoy cream puffs, but this one tasted like it was a day old, heh =)
DeleteI'm quite fond of that plum liquor. Seems that charcoal buns are the "in" thing at the moment. I like a bit of colour in my burger.
ReplyDeleteThe Yum List: yeah, that plum liquor definitely has its fans (including one of my friends)! and ya, the charcoal bun craze has certainly swept quite a few outlets. wonder if we'll be seeing blue buns next :D
DeleteThe place looks gorgeous! Pity bout the food though...
ReplyDeleteBarry: ya, kudos to the decorator. it definitely doesn't blend in with the rest of the kopitiam outlets at kota damansara =)
Deleteaiiyoh.. doesn't compel me either la then. I think jumping on the burger bandwagon is going to be the undoing of many incompetent restaurants who just want to ride the fade wave..
ReplyDeleteCiki: heheh, but the burger fad isn't fading away. not this year, at this rate! :D
Deletei meant FAD. sorry haha
ReplyDeleteCiki: haha, you type too fast lah! :D
DeleteThis burger frenzy is still madly on going...like the gangnam style...ppl are still not sick with it yet. The lounge looks really nice. But the charcoal bun doesn't quite look too attractive. (Can't help making comparisson with the ones in burger lab).
ReplyDeleteSycookies: yeah, i definitely still am not bored yet of biting into burgers. i'm wondering whether this place should change its menu though, to offer something more in line with its nice, lounge-like setting. and yeah, myburgerlab is still my top choice for burgers! :D
DeleteHmm Not very pastry from what's served eh? The bun and fries don't look very appetizing.. But I wouldn't mind the burger! hehe.. Happy Chinese New Year to you Sean!! Gong Xi Fa Cai!
ReplyDeleteIamthewitch: thanks, mei yee! hope you and hubby have a great and festive chinese new year down under too, ya :D yeah, there are some pastries and buns and cakes sold here, but i didn't try them. and ya, out of the burger, the fries and the melon bun, if i had to choose one, it'd definitely be the burger! :D
DeleteI suppose you have to give them marks for trying? Although wasabi-spiced fries were never going to make the headlines...
ReplyDeleteYouHadYourLunch: yeah, i feel a bit bad that i couldn't have praised the food here, but i do hope they'll still be able to cultivate a following among enough customers. i like my fries really fluffy, so the ones here didn't work for me, heh :D
DeleteMild curry chicken burger, I think thats worth a try !
ReplyDelete... With the sweetnest of Japanese curry !
DeleteWong: ya, i enjoy japanese curry! creamy but not too spicy :D
DeleteHi Ching Wah & Sean,
DeleteGong Xi Fa Chai Guys! FYI, YummyLicious do have a Japanese Chicken Katsu Burger served with our very own homemade sweet curry sauce. We call it The Vader Burger :D LOL https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.351217361638932.81711.191168947643775&type=3
